Mushrooms 101

I've never cooked exotic mushrooms. Where do I start?
Lion's Mane and Blue Oyster are the most forgiving. Sear in butter, salt at the end. The Tastes-like section on the homepage maps each species to flavors you already know.
How fresh are these when I get them?
For local delivery, harvested within 24 hours of you receiving them. For shipped dried products, the dehydration happens within 48 hours of harvest. We don't resell other farms' product. Every mushroom on the site, we grew.
How long do they keep?
Fresh species: 5 to 7 days in the fridge in a paper bag (not plastic. They need to breathe). Dried species: 6+ months in a sealed jar in a cool cabinet.
Are any of these psychoactive?
No. We only grow culinary and functional species. No Psilocybe. The "functional" label means species with evidence-backed wellness use (Reishi, Turkey Tail, Lion's Mane, Cordyceps). They're sold as food ingredients, not medicine.

Orders + delivery

How does the fresh-delivery zone work?
Within 35 miles of Gurnee, IL we hand-deliver Wednesday and Saturday. The day after harvest. At checkout we check your ZIP. Outside the zone, fresh isn't an option but dried species ship anywhere in the lower 48. Full details on Shipping.
Can I pick up at a farmers market?
Yes. Pick "Pit Stop pickup" at checkout and we'll have your order labeled and bagged at the next market on your route. See Pit Stops for the schedule.
What if my mushrooms arrive damaged?
Reply to your order confirmation within 24 hours of delivery and we'll refund or credit immediately. No return shipping needed. See Returns.
Do you do gift orders?
Yes, with a personal note. Email hello@motorspores.com with the recipient address + the date you want it to land. We'll set it up.

Subscriptions

How does the subscription work?
Pick a species, a pack size (½ lb or 1 lb), and a cadence (weekly, every-2-weeks, or monthly). Stripe handles billing. You get the same species at the same cadence at a 15 to 25% discount depending on frequency — full breakdown on the subscriptions page. Pause, skip, or cancel any time.
Can I subscribe to more than one species?
Yes. Add each one to the cart with the same cadence. All your subscription items become one Stripe subscription with multiple line items. We can't mix cadences in one subscription (Stripe API limit), so if you want weekly Lion's Mane and monthly Reishi, those are two separate subscriptions.
When do you charge me?
First charge happens at signup. Subsequent charges run on the cadence you picked. Same day each week, every other week, or each month. Stripe emails the receipt automatically.
How do I cancel or skip?
Open the Stripe Billing Portal from the link in your welcome email (or click "Manage subscription" on /subscribe-thanks). You can skip a single delivery, pause for a few weeks, or cancel entirely. No cancellation fees.
Does the price ever change?
Your subscription price is locked at signup. If we raise per-pound rates later, existing subscribers stay at the rate they started with until they cancel or change cadence.

The 10% mission

How does the 10% to causes work?
10% of every pound's price routes to a non-profit cause we've matched to that species. The full ledger is public on the Impact page. Every cent that's moved through is logged.
Why these specific causes?
We tried to match species to causes that share a logical thread. Nootropic species fund brain-health work, immune-support species fund cancer research, high-energy species fund veteran reintegration. The full reasoning is on the About page.
Can I see proof the money is going out?
Yes. The public ledger updates in real time. Distribution to the non-profit partners happens quarterly. Third-party verified annual report is on our pre-launch checklist; we'll publish it once we cross the threshold to make verification worth the cost.

About the farm

Where do you grow?
In a converted warehouse in Gurnee, IL. Climate-controlled rooms per species, automation stack we built ourselves (TurboBatch). No outdoor cultivation.
Are these organic?
We grow without pesticides, fungicides, or chemical sterilants. We're not yet USDA Certified Organic. The substrate inputs (hardwood pellets, soy hulls, oat bran) meet the standard but the audit is a separate cost we haven't taken on yet. The cultivation practices wouldn't change either way.
Do you ship spawn or grow kits?
Not yet. We focused on the fresh-and-dried catalog first. Spawn + kits are on the long-term roadmap if there's demand. Email if you'd be a buyer.
